This short workshop has been written to support children and young people in care and the staff who support them in a school environment
We begin by sharing ideas in pairs about the care system and the journey into foster and possible adoptive care. We explore experiences, processes and systems in place to better understand the life of LAC.
We then share ideas as a group, as to current strategies, tools and experiences already used.
As we continue through the day we work through dilemmas and stresses caused by being in care and some of the different issues presented as a result of trauma, neglect and abuse.
We explore different activities, strategies and tools that could be incorporated and integrated into the school day to support LAC and those in adoptive homes.
Finally, a variety of therapies are briefly introduced, these include – play therapy, Thera-play, DDP and Filial Therapy.
Lots of literature, further reading and handouts re activities shared throughout the day.
This course can be tailored to need - we recommend between 3-6 hours – either together or delivered on twilight or staff development days.
The course trainer is a highly experienced Foster carer, and has cared for Children and Young people aged 2-18. She also works for Core Assets and the Foster Carers Association as a Therapist. This involves working with LAC, Children in adoptive homes, Social Services, Birth Parents, Foster Carers and Adoptive Parents, Teachers, SENCO’s, and other staff involved in TAC and CAFCASS processes.
